BIOGRAPHY

At just seventeen, Peter Hoelstad embarked on a life-changing journey when he took the train to Stockholm in search of his fortune in the big city. Initially starting his career as a chef, Peter soon discovered that his true passion lay in travel and photography—far more exciting than arranging asparagus in a cellar. His early culinary days taught him the value of working quickly and improvising when challenges arise, skills he seamlessly translated into his photographic work. Peter’s images are renowned for their authentic, documentary feel—a quality he strives to capture even in controlled studio settings. Throughout his career, he has traveled extensively, photographing a diverse array of subjects, from regal queens and nuclear reactors to dramatic executions and thrilling football matches. His professional journey includes significant stints at major Swedish publications; he worked at Svenska Dagbladet from 1994 to 1997 and then spent five years at Dagens Nyheter. One of Peter’s most memorable assignments came when aid organization Diakonia sent him to Africa. "I met many fantastic people who had been given the opportunity to change their lives for the better. It’s meetings like these that make me love my job. If my pictures can help someone improve their quality of life, then it truly feels like I’ve accomplished something meaningful," he reflects. Peter Hoelstad’s compelling documentary style and extensive travel experience continue to drive his passion for photography, capturing moments that resonate with authenticity and inspire change.
