BIOGRAPHY

Ryan Koopmans (BA, MFA) is a Dutch-Canadian photographer whose work delves into the interplay between the built environment and the communities it shapes. Born in Amsterdam in 1986 and raised on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada, Ryan's academic journey began with an interdisciplinary focus at the University of British Columbia—blending geography, art history, and psychology—to explore the foundations of architecture and societal dynamics. He further refined his artistic vision by earning an MFA in Photography, Video & Related Media from The School of Visual Arts in New York City in 2012. Primarily captivated by the surreal structures of the world's megacities and urban landscapes, Ryan’s photography highlights the formal qualities of geometry, repetition, and vibrant saturation, which he describes as "the poetry of form in interesting locations." His work vividly documents the convergence of natural and manmade elements—a perspective deeply influenced by his upbringing on Canada's expansive, rugged West Coast, where vast distances and dramatic vistas instilled in him a love for shooting from a remote, wide-angled perspective. Now based in Stockholm, Sweden, Ryan spends much of the year traveling globally for both personal projects and commissioned photography and video work.
